MEETING NEEDS OR MEETING THE MISSION?

"A needs driven church is a self-centered church where people ask less what God is calling them to do for others and instead they wonder what God has called others to do for them.

"The central task of the church is not to meet needs but to embody the gospel of Jesus Christ and bear witness to the transforming power of the cross and resurrection." -- Allan Bevere

John F. Kennedy once famously remarked, "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country." As we enter this tumultuous new year, we need to refocus our efforts as Christians on the true mission of the church -- telling others of the good news of Jesus Christ and of the transforming life that results -- rather than focusing on just meeting needs, ours or others.

Bevere points out that needs do get met through the church, but that is ancillary to our mission. Jesus said to go and make disciples, not go and satisfy all their needs. Their needs will be met in Him. "My grace is sufficient for you."

Spend time this weekend focusing on what Christ is calling you to do to further His kingdom in this new year and don't wear yourself out trying to meet all the needs of those around you.
