As we have discussed in our Sunday morning messages and at Bible study, we are the sum of our five closest friends. This article scientifically demonstrates the truth of this statement.
What this means for us is that we need to be careful in choosing our friends. That does not mean we should not associate with unbelievers or the world. These are rightly called our neighbors, and not our friends.
Our friends are those people who inform and speak into our lives. In other words, our friends are those who help shape us and mold us.
As Christians, we should seek to be with a close band of friends who share our Christian values and beliefs, who will hold us accountable for our actions, who will defend us as necessary, who will engage with us in the battlefield of spirituality in this world.
As the laws of thermodynamics teach, energy trends towards entropy. We find a similar law in spirituality, where our very nature trends away from God. "Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it. Prone to leave the God I love..."
It is far easier to be drawn away from God if we surround ourselves with those who hold opposite views and opinions and allow them to influence our lives in a negative direction.
We need to be careful who we allow to speak into our lives, so we will be drawn closer to Christ and the cross and not to the world.
